It is a task that would test the skills of even the most experienced and able-bodies sailor but on 16th June 2008, in a yacht steered by her own breath, Hilary Lister embarked on a voyage to become the first quadriplegic sailor to circumnavigate Britain.

2008 Sailing Regatta at Largs Marina on Tuesday 13th May.

Once again the Kapital Foundation Charity Yacht Race Challenge was a resounding success.  Blessed with tremendous weather and exciting race conditions, this year’s results were closed than ever with three teams tied on first place (Bell & Scott, Turcan Connell and Kapital Aviation).

Invoking the tie break rule saw Kapital Aviation rest the trophy away from last year’s winners, Bell & Scott.

Government visitors to the Centre in Staffin

Fiona Hyslop MSP visited the Columba 1400 Leadership Centre in StaffinOn Monday 19th November, Cabinet Secretary for Education and Life Long Learning, Fiona Hyslop MSP visited the Columba 1400 Leadership Centre in Staffin, Isle of Skye, hosted by Norman Drummond and Columban supporter, Sir Tom Farmer. The Minister was joined by HM Chief Inspector of Schools, Graham Donaldson, and other senior figures in education.

Columban graduates from St Ninian’s High School and Lossiemouth High School joined the Columban team to greet our guests, along with graduates from our Head Teacher Leadership Academy from schools throughout Scotland.

The young graduates gave a compelling picture of all that had been achieved since their return from Skye and the degree to which this had influenced their wider schools and communities. The Head Teachers gave a similarly hopeful and positive picture of the future for Scottish education and the changes they had been able to make in their own schools.

One of our visitors commented, “It was good to see Columba 1400 in reality… It was great to hear what the young people and teachers had to say, and to find out from such a wide range of head teachers and deputes what the experience had meant for them and for their schools.”

The staff and children of Staffin Primary School also came out to meet the Minister and to welcome our visitors.

We were delighted that thanks to the generosity of Richard Bailey, Keith Punler of the Punler Foundation and Sir Tom Farmer the visits were able to be made by helicopter, thus allowing the day trip to also include a visit to Sabhal Mor Ostaig – the southern star in the Skye firmament!

Humbie Village

"AN entire East Lothian village has been put up for sale.

The Children's Village of Humbie, designed 100 years ago to provide holiday accommodation for "sick children in need of country air", ceased to operate in 1999 - and has now been put on the market, complete with schoolhouse and dining hall.

The village, which has nine buildings ranging from offers over £145,000 to offers over £230,000, is being marketed either as separate homes - or as a whole.

Selling agent Nikki Wilton, of DMH Baird Lumsden, said: "This is a truly unique development. The idea of there being a whole little village up for sale is wonderful.

"The properties have great appeal for everyone, whether you may be a lottery winner looking to buy houses for yourself and your entire family in your very own village, or whether you are interested in just one property."

All of the properties, which sit on half and acre of land each, are in need of refurbishment or conversion.

The neighbouring village of Humbie has about 80 houses, a post office and a primary school."
